Letters written to his family by Milford Goodrich during his journey to California from Bingham ME. The first letter is dated Skowhegan, Nov 14, 1859, where the group of travelers stopped for the night before boarding 'The Ariel" for the journey to California. They had just received a "telegraphic dispatch tonight The North Star, the boat that we were going in is not heard from, but they are going to put on the "Aerial", a boat equally as good."
There is a letter dated Nov 24, 1859 written "on board the Ariel" describing the trip in progress.
Most letters are written from Volcano, Amador Co., Cal. and describe the area around Volcano, the work he is doing in mining with his brother and others, vivid descriptions of events and individuals involved, and his experiences as a teacher in the local school.
